  4.     Are U.S. takeover artists ready to breach the clubby confines
  5. of the Tokyo stock market? In what appears to be the first direct
  6. hostile raid on a Japanese company by a foreigner, T. Boone Pickens
  7. disclosed last week, the Texas-based corporate raider has
  8. accumulated a 20% stake in Koito Manufacturing, a key supplier of
  9. car parts to Toyota.

  11.     Pickens' foray drew flak from Tokyo investors, who saw the move
  12. as an attempt to elicit greenmail -- the money that a company pays
  13. raiders when it buys back their shares at a costly premium. The
  14. Japanese government is investigating whether Pickens ambushed Koito
  15. by teaming up with secret partners who unethically bought shares
  16. for him under their own names.

  18.     While Pickens is now Koito's largest shareholder, analysts
  19. doubt that the Texan can take over the company. Reason: most of
  20. Koito's shares lie firmly in the hands of corporate allies who
  21. rarely sell their holdings. Since Japanese companies are not
  22. allowed to own their own stock, Pickens might try to sell his stake
  23. to one of Koito's allies. The Texan claims he simply saw Koito as
  24. a company with potential for improvement. Says he: "We want to work
  25. with Koito. New blood often helps."
